HANSEL AND GRETEL
ヘンゼルとグレーテル

Hard by a great forest dwelt(dwell) a poor wood-cutter/ with his wife and his two children/. The boy was called Hansel and the girl Gretel/. He had little/ to bite and to break/, and once when great dearth fell on the land/, he could no longer procure even daily bread.

大きな森のすぐ近くに貧しい木こりが住んでいました／妻と二人の子供と一緒に／。少年はヘンゼルそして少女はグレーテルと呼ばれていました／。木こりはほとんどないほどでした／食べることも休むことも／、あるときひどい飢饉（ききん）がこの国に起こりました／、木こりは毎日のパンさえももはや手に入れることができなくなりました。

さて木こりはこれを夜ベッドに入るまで考えていました／、それで心配のあまり揺れ動いていました／、木こりはため息をついてそして妻に向って言いました／。「私達はどうなることだろう／私達はどうやってかわいそうな子供たちを養っていくことができるだろう？／私たちがもう何も食べるものがないのに／自分たちのさえ？」

'I'll tell you what, husband/,' answered the woman/, 'early tomorrow morning/ we will take the children out into the forest/ to where it is the thickest/; there we will light a fire for them/, and give each of them one more piece of bread/, and then we will go to our work/ and leave them alone.

「ねえ、お前さん」と妻が答えました／、「あすの朝早くに／私達は子供たちを森の中へ連れ出しましょう／そこは一番茂っているところです／、そこで私達はあの子達にたき火をしてやり／そしてめいめいにパンを一切れずつあげて／それから仕事にとりかかり／そして子供達を置き去りにしましょう。

They will not find the way home again/, and we shall be rid of them.' 'No, wife,' said the man/, 'I will not do that;/ how can I bear/ to leave my children alone in the forest?/―the wild animals would soon come and tear them to pieces.'

子供達はもう一度帰る道がわからないから／、こいつらを取り除けるよ。」「いや、お前」と夫は言いました／、「そんなことは私はしない／、私にはとても耐えられない／自分の子供を森の中に置き去りにするなんて？／、恐ろしいけだものがすぐにやってきてそして子供らを引きさいてバラバラにしてしまうだろう」

'O, you fool!' said she/, 'then we must all four die of hunger/, you may as well plane/ the planks for our coffins/,' and she left him no peace/ until he consented.

「まあ、おばかさんね。」と妻は言いました／、「それじゃ私達四人みんな餓死しなければなりませんよ／、お前さんはかんながけする方がよさそうだ／私たちの棺桶の板に」／、とおばあさんは夫の心を休ませなかった／夫が同意するまで。

'But I feel very sorry for the poor children, all the same,' said the man. The two children had also not been able to sleep/ for hunger/, and had heard/ what their stepmother had said to their father.

「でもかわいそうなこども達だなあ、そうはいってもね」と夫は言いました。二人の子供も眠ることができなかった／お腹がすいて／、それで聞いてしまいました／彼らのまま母が父親に言っていることを。

Gretel wept(weep) bitter tears/, and said to Hansel:/ 'Now all is over with us/.' 'Be quiet, Gretel,' said Hansel/, 'do not distress yourself/, I will soon find a way to help us/.' And when the old folks had fallen asleep/, he got up/, put on his little coat/, opened the door below/, and crept(creep) outside.

グレーテルはつらい涙を流して／、そしてヘンゼルに言いました／。「もう万事休すだわ。」／「しっ、グレーテル」ヘンゼルは言いました／、「そんなに悲しまないで／、ぼくがすぐになんとかして助けるよ」／。そして両親が寝入ってしまうと／、ヘンゼルは起きだして／、小さい上着をきて／、低い戸を開けて／そして四つんばいではって外に出ました。

The moon shone(shine) brightly/, and the white pebbles which(they) lay in front of the house/ glittered like real silver pennies/. Hansel stooped/ and stuffed the little pocket of his coat/ with as many as he could get in.

月が明るく輝いていました／、そして白い砂利石が家の前にあって／本物の銀硬貨のようにかがやいていました／。ヘンゼルはかがんで／そして上着のポッケに詰め込みました／彼が入れたいだけ。

Then he went back and said to Gretel: /'Be comforted/, dear little sister/, and sleep in peace/, God will not forsake us/,' and he lay down again in his bed.

それから彼は戻ってきてそしてグレーテルに言いました／。「安心しなさい／、かわいい妹よ／、そして安心してお眠り／、神さまは僕たちを見捨てやしないから。」そして自分もまたベッドで横になりました。

When day dawned/, but before the sun had risen/, the woman came and awoke(awake) the two children/, saying: 'Get up/, you sluggards!/ we are going into the forest to fetch wood/.' She gave each a little piece of bread/, and said: '

世が明けると／、だけどまだ日がのぼる前に／、まま母がやってきてそして二人の子どもを起こしました／、こう言った、「起きなさい／、お前たちは怠けものだね！／、私達は森に行って薪を取ってくるんだよ。」／まま母はそれぞれの子どもに一切れのパンをやって／言いました。

「ほらお昼のぶんだよ／、でもその時まで食べてはいけませんよ／、お前たちには他にないんだからね。」グレーテルがパンを前掛けの下に入れました／、ヘンゼルはポケットに小石を入れていたからです。

それからみんな揃って森に向って出掛けました／。彼らはしばらく行くと／、ヘンゼルは立ち止まって家のほうを振り返り／そしてそんなことを再三繰り返しました。

His father said:/ 'Hansel, what are you looking at there and staying behind for? Pay attention/, and do not forget how to use your legs/.' 'Ah, father,' said Hansel/, 'I am looking at my little white cat/, which(it) is sitting up on the roof/, and wants to say goodbye to me.'

父親が言いました／「ヘンゼルや、そこで留まって何を探しているんだね？／、注意して／、そして道順を忘れないように。」／「ああ、お父さん、」ヘンゼルは言いました／、「私は私の小さい白い子猫を見ています／、子猫は屋根の上に座って／、そして僕にさよならを言いたいのです。」

The wife said:/ 'Fool, that is not your little cat/, that is the morning sun/ which(it) is shining on the chimneys/.' Hansel, however, had not been looking back at the cat/, but had been constantly throwing/ one of the white pebble-stones out of his pocket on the road.

まま母は言いました／「ばかだね／、あれはお前の子猫じゃないよ／、あれは朝日だよ／それは煙突を照らしている」ヘンゼルはしかし、子猫の方を振り返っていたのではありませんでした／、そうではなくてたえず投げていたのです／一つずつ白い小石をポケットから道に。

When they had reached the middle of the forest/, the father said:/ 'Now, children, pile up some wood/, and I will light a fire/ that you may not be cold/.' Hansel and Gretel gathered brushwood together/, as high as a little hill.

みんなが森の真ん中につくと／、父親が言いました／「さあ、子ども達、たき木を集めなさい／、わしはたき火をするからね／、(that節)お前たちがこごえないようということ。」／ヘンゼルとグレーテルは一緒にしばを集めました／、小さい丘のように高くなる。

The brushwood was lighted/, and when the flames were burning very high/, the woman said:/ 'Now, children, lay yourselves down by the fire and rest/, we will go into the forest and cut some wood/. When we have done/, we will come back and fetch you away.'

しばに火をつけられました／、そして炎が非常に高く燃え上がったとき／、まま母が言いました／。「さて、子どもたちよ、たき火のそばに横になって休みなさい／、私達は森の中に行ってそして木を切るからね／。終わったら／、戻ってきてそしてお前たちを連れて帰るよ。」

Hansel and Gretel sat by the fire/, and when noon came/, each ate a little piece of bread/, and as they heard the strokes of the wood-axe/ they believed/ that their father was near.

ヘンゼルとグレーテルはたき火のそばに座りました／、そしてお昼になると／、それぞれ一切れのパンを食べました／、それから彼らは木を切る斧の一撃が聞こえたので／、彼らは思いました／お父さんは近くにいるということを。

It was not the axe/, however, but a branch/ which(it) he had fastened to a withered tree/ which(it) the wind was blowing backwards and forwards.

And as they had been sitting such a long time/, their eyes closed with fatigue/, and they fell fast asleep.

When at last they awoke/, it was already dark night/. Gretel began to cry and said:/ 'How are we to get out of the forest now?/' But Hansel comforted her and said:/ 'Just wait a little/, until the moon has risen/, and then we will soon find the way.'

ようやく彼らは目をさますと／、もう暗い夜でした／。グレーテルは泣き始めましたそして言いました／。「どうやって僕たちは森から出たらいいのこれから？」／でもヘンゼルはグレーテルを慰めました／、「ちょっとお待ち／、月が出るまでね／、そしたらすぐに道が見つかるよ。」

そして満月がのぼると／、ヘンゼルはかわいい妹の手をとり／、そして小石の後をたどって／、小石は新しい銀貨のように輝いていました／そして二人に道を示してくれました。

They walked the whole night long/, and by break of day came once more to their father's house/. They knocked at the door/, and when the woman opened it and saw/ that it was Hansel and Gretel/, she said:

二人は一晩ずっと歩いて／夜が明けるころ再びお父さんの家に帰って来ました／。彼らが戸をたたくと／、まま母がドアを開けてそして見ると／、ヘンゼルとグレーテルがいるのを／彼女は言いました。

'You naughty children/, why have you slept(sleep) so long in the forest?/―we thought/ you were never coming back at all!/' The father, however, rejoiced,/ for it had cut him to the heart/ to leave them behind alone.

「悪い子どもだね／、なんだってそんなに長く森の中に寝ていたのさ？ー私たちは思っていたよ／お前たちはもう家に帰るのがいやになったと」けれども父親は喜びました／、なぜならそれは彼の胸に深くこたえた／子どもたちを見捨てたことを。

Not long afterwards/, there was once more great dearth throughout the land/, and the children heard/ their mother saying at night to their father:

それからまもなく／、また国中で大変な飢饉がありました／、それで子どもたちは聞きました／まま母が夜お父さんに言っていることを。

'Everything is eaten again/, we have one half loaf left/, and that is the end/. The children must go/, we will take them farther into the wood/, so that they will not find their way out again;/ there is no other means of saving ourselves!'

「またすっかり食べつくして／、あとパンのひとかたまりが半分あるきりよ／、それでおしまいですよ／。子どもたちを追い出さなくちゃ／、子どもらをもっと深く森の中に連れ込みましょう／、だから子どもたちがふたたび道を見つけだせないように／、私たちを救う手段は他にないですから。」

The man's heart was heavy/, and he thought:/ 'It would be better for you/ to share the last mouthful with your children/.' The woman, however, would listen to nothing/ that he had to say/, but scolded and reproached him.

お父さんは内心つらくなり／、そして考えました／。「それはより望ましいであろう／最後の一切れも子どもたちと分けあったほうが。」／しかし妻は何も聞こうとしないで／彼が言ったことを／、そうではなくて夫を叱りつけてそして非難しました。

彼は「A」といったからにはやはり「B」と言わないわけにいきません、さらに／、夫は最初従ったので／、それで二どめもそうするほかありません。

The children, however, were still awake/ and had heard the conversation/. When the old folks were asleep/, Hansel again got up/, and wanted to go out and pick up pebbles/ as he had done before/, but the woman had locked the door/, and Hansel could not get out.

子どもたちは、また一方、まだ目が覚めていて／それでその話を聞いていました／。年寄りが寝ると／、ヘンゼルはまた起き上がって／、外に行きたかったそして小石を拾い上げました／、この前のように／、けれどもまま母が戸を閉めてしまいました／、それでヘンゼルは外に出ることができませんでした。

Nevertheless he comforted his little sister/, and said: 'Do not cry, Gretel, go to sleep quietly/, the good God will help us.'

それでもなおヘンゼルは小さい妹をなぐさめて／、言いました、「泣かないで、グレーテル、静かにしてお眠り／、神さまが私たちを助けて下さるよ。」

Early in the morning came the woman/, and took the children out of their beds/. Their piece of bread was given to them/, but it was still smaller than the time before/. On the way into the forest Hansel crumbled his in his pocket/, and often stood(stand) still /and threw(throw) a morsel on the ground.

あくる朝早くまま母が来て／、そして子どもたちをベッドから出しました／。彼らのパンを一切れ二人にやりました／、それはしかしこの前のよりなおいっそう小さいのでした／。森へ行く途中でヘンゼルはポケットの中で砕いていた／、そしてたびたび静かに立ち止まっては／一口分を地面に投げました。

'Hansel, why do you stop and look round?/' said the father, 'go on.'/ 'I am looking back at my little pigeon/ which(it) is sitting on the roof/, and wants to say goodbye to me/,' answered Hansel.

「ヘンゼル、何でお前は立ち止まってまわりを見回すんだい？」お父さんが言いました、「さっさと道を歩きなさい。」「僕の小ばとを振り返って見ているのです／、それはあの屋根にとまって／、そして僕にさよならを言おうとしている。」ヘンゼルは答えました。

'Fool!' said the woman/, 'that is not your little pigeon/, that is the morning sun/ that is shining on the chimney/.' Hansel, however little by little/, threw(throw) all the crumbs on the path.

「ばかだね、」まま母は言いました／、「あれは小ばとじゃないよ／、あれは朝日で／、それが煙突を照らしているだよ」ヘンゼルはしかし少しずつ／パンのくずを全部道に投げ捨てました。

The woman led( lead) the children still deeper into the forest/, where(there) they had never in their lives been before/. Then a great fire was again made/, and the mother said: 'Just sit there, you children, and when you are tired/ you may sleep a little;/ we are going into the forest to cut wood/, and in the evening when we are done/, we will come and fetch you away.'

まま母は子どもたちをさらに深い森の中へ連れて行きました／、そこでは彼らは以前に暮らしたこともなかった／。それから大きなたき火をまた燃やそうとしていました／、そしてまま母が言いました。「そこにただ座っておいで／、子どもたちよ、お前たちはくたびれたら／少し眠ってもいいよ／、私たちは森に行って木を切るからね／、そして夕方仕事がすんだら／、戻って来てお前たちをすぐに連れに来るからね。」

When it was noon/, Gretel shared her piece of bread with Hansel/, who(he) had scattered(scatter) his by the way.

お昼になると／、グレーテルは自分の一切れのパンをヘンゼルと分けました／、ヘンゼルは自分のを道にばらまいたからでした。

Then they fell asleep and evening passed/, but no one came/ to the poor children/. They did not awake/ until it was dark night/, and Hansel comforted his little sister and said:

それから二人は眠りましたそして夕方が過ぎました／、しかし誰も来ませんでした／かわいそうな子どもたちのところに／。二人は目を覚ましませんでした／まっ暗な夜になるまで／、それでヘンゼルはかわいい妹を慰めて言いました。

'Just wait, Gretel, until the moon rises/, and then we shall see the crumbs of bread/ which(them) I have strewn(strew) about/, they will show us our way home again.'

「ただ待っててね、グレーテル、月が昇るまで／、それからパンくずが見えるよ／僕のまいておいたパンくずを／、それが私たちに再び家に帰る道を見えるようにするよ」

When the moon came they set out/, but they found(find) no crumbs/, for the many thousands of birds/ which(they) fly about in the woods and fields/ had picked them all up.

お月さまが上がったので二人は出かけました／、しかしパンくずはもうどこにも見あたりませんでした／、というのは何千もの鳥たちが／、森や野を動き回って飛んで／それらをみんな拾い上げたのです。

Hansel said to Gretel:/ 'We shall soon find the way/,' but they did not find it/. They walked the whole night/ and all the next day too from morning till evening/, but they did not get out of the forest/, and were very hungry/, for they had nothing to eat but two or three berries/, which(they) grew(grow) on the ground.

ヘンゼルはグレーテルに言いました／「道はすぐに見つかるよ。」／しかし道は見つかりませんでした／。子どもたちは夜どおし歩きました／それからもう1日朝から晩まで／、しかし子どもたちは森から出られませんでした／、そしてとても腹ぺこになりました／、なぜならば子どもたちはいちごを二、三個食べただけでした／、それは地面にはえていた。

And as they were so weary/ that their legs would carry them no longer/, they lay down beneath a tree and fell asleep.

それに子どもたちはひどく疲れたので／足がもう支えられなくなった／、二人は木の下に横になってそして眠りました。

It was now three mornings/ since they had left(leave) their father's house/. They began to walk again/, but they always came(come) deeper into the forest/, and if help did not come soon/, they must die of hunger and weariness/. When it was mid-day/, they saw(see) a beautiful snow-white bird sitting on a bough/, which(it) sang so delightfully/ that they stood still and listened to it.

さてもう三日めの朝でした／子どもたちがお父さんの家から捨てられてから／。二人はまた歩き出しました／、しかし子どもたちはいつもずっと深く森の中に向って進みました／それですぐ助けが来てくれなければ／、子どもたちは飢えと疲労で死ぬしかありませんでした／。お昼ころになったとき／、子どもたちは雪のように白い美しい小鳥が大きな枝にとまっているのが見えました／、それがたいへん美しく歌った／、子どもたちは立ち止まってそして耳を傾けました。

And when its song was over/, it spread its wings/ and flew away before them/, and they followed it/ until they reached a little house/, on the roof of which(its) it alighted;/ and when they approached the little house/ they saw/ that it was built of bread and covered with cakes/, but that the windows were of clear sugar. '

その小鳥が歌い終わったとき／、羽を揺らして／そして二人の前を飛び去りました／、それで二人はそのあとを付けて行きました／小鳥たちが一軒の小さな家に着くまで／、小鳥はその屋根の上に舞い降りた／、そして子どもたちが小さな家のすぐそばまで行くと／、二人には見えました／その小さな家はパンでできておりそしておかしで屋根をつけていました／でもそれは窓はきれいな砂糖でした。

We will set to work on that/,' said Hansel, 'and have a good meal/. I will eat a bit of the roof/, and you Gretel/, can eat some of the window/, it will taste sweet/.' Hansel reached up above/, and broke off a little of the roof/ to try how it tasted/, and Gretel leant(lean) against the window/ and nibbled at the panes/. Then a soft voice cried from the parlour:

「僕たちごちそうになってやろう。」ヘンゼルが言いました、「そしてこの上ない幸せな食べ物を手にする／。僕は屋根を一切れ食べるから／、グレーテル／、お前は窓のいくらかを食べてもいいよ／。窓は甘いよ。」／ヘンゼルは手を上の方に伸ばして／、そして少し屋根をちぎり／ためしてみましたどんな味がするか／、そしてグレーテルは窓ガラスに寄って／そして窓枠をかじりました／。そのとき居間からやさしい声で呼ばれました。

and went on eating/ without disturbing themselves/. Hansel, who(he) liked the taste of the roof/, tore down a great piece of it/, and Gretel pushed out the whole of one round window-pane/, sat down, and enjoyed herself with it/. Suddenly the door opened/, and a woman as old as the hills/, who(she) supported herself on crutches/, came creeping out.

そして食べ続けました／取り乱さないで／。ヘンゼルは、屋根がたいそうおいしそうだったので／、そのすてきな一切れをこわして／、それでグレーテルはまるい窓ガラスをまるごと押し出しました／、腰を低くおろして、そして満喫しました／。突然家の戸があいて／、そしておばあさんのように年老いた女が／、彼女は松葉杖に支えられて／、そっと近づいて姿を現しました。

Hansel and Gretel were so terribly frightened/ that they let fall/ what they had in their hands/. The old woman, however, nodded(nod) her head, and said:/ 'Oh, you dear children/, who has brought you here?/ do come in, and stay with me/. No harm shall happen to you/.' She took them both by the hand/, and led(lead) them into her little house.

ヘンゼルとグレーテルはとてもひどくびっくりしました／、子どもたちは落としてしまいました／両手に持っていたものを／。おばあさんは、しかし頭をうなずいて、言いました／「おや、かわいい子だね／、誰がお前さんたちをここへ連れてきたの？さあ入りなさい、そして私のところにいなさい／、何も被害は起こらないよ。」／おばさんは二人の手をとって／、そして家の中に連れ込みました。

Then good food was set before them/, milk and pancakes, with sugar, apples, and nuts/. Afterwards two pretty little beds were covered/ with clean white linen/, and Hansel and Gretel lay down in them/, and thought they were in heaven.

そのとき見事な食べ物が子どもたちの前に整っていた／、ミルクとパンケーキ、に砂糖、りんご、そしてくるみが付いて／。そのあと二つのかわいい小さいベッドにかけられてました／きれいな白い布が／、そしてヘンゼルとグレーテルはその中に横になって／、それで天国ではないかと思いました。

The old woman had only pretended to be so kind;/ she was in reality a wicked witch/, who(she) lay in wait for children/, and had only built the little house of bread/ in order to entice them there.

おばあさんはそのように親切そうなふりをしただけで／、本当は悪い魔女で／、子どもたちを待ちぶせていたのでした／、それからただパンの家を建てたのも／、二人をそこに誘い出すためにしたことでした。

When a child fell into her power/, she killed it/, cooked and ate it/, and that was a feast day with her/. Witches have red eyes/, and cannot see far/, but they have a keen scent like the beasts/, and are aware when human beings draw near.

子ども一人がおばあさんの力に落ちいったら／、おばあさんはそれを殺して／、煮てそして食べてしまうのです／、それがおばあさんのお祝い日でした／。魔女たちは赤い目をしており／、そして遠くは見えません／、しかし鋭い臭覚を持っていて獣のように／、それで人間が近づくときに気がつくのです。

When Hansel and Gretel came into her neighbourhood/, she laughed with malice/, and said mockingly: /'I have them, they shall not escape me again!'

ヘンゼルとグレーテルが魔女の近くに来た時／、魔女は意地悪く笑って／、そしてからかって言いました／。「あいつら捕まえたぞ、もう逃がさないぞ！」

Early in the morning/ before the children were awake/, she was already up/, and when she saw both of them sleeping and looking so pretty/, with their plump and rosy cheeks/ she muttered to herself:/ 'That will be a dainty mouthful!'

あくる朝早く／子どもたちが目を覚ます前に／、魔女はもう起きていました／、それで二人がとても可愛らしく休んでいるのを見ると／、赤い丸々としたほおをして／魔女は一人でつぶやきました／「これは口いっぱいのごちそうになるぞ。」

Then she seized Hansel with her shrivelled hand/, carried him into a little stable/, and locked him in behind a grated door/. Scream as he might/, it would not help him.

その時魔女はやせこけた手でヘンゼルをつかまえた／そして小さい家畜小屋にヘンゼルを運び込んで／、それで彼を格子戸の後に閉じ込めました／ヘンゼルがどのように悲鳴をあげても／、助かりませんでした。

Then she went to Gretel/, shook(shake) her till she awoke/, and cried: 'Get up, lazy thing/, fetch some water/, and cook something good for your brother/, he is in the stable outside/, and is to be made fat/. When he is fat/, I will eat him.'

それから魔女はグレーテルのところへ行くと／、グレーテルが起きるまで揺りました／それで怒鳴りました、「起きなさい、怠け者め／、水をくんできて／、それで兄さんに何かうまいものを作っておやり／、兄さんは外の小屋にいるよ／、それで太らせようとしている／。太ったら／、わしが食べてやる。」

Gretel began(begin) to weep bitterly/, but it was all in vain/, for she was forced to do/ what the wicked witch commanded.

グレーテルははげしく泣きだしました／、けれどもすべてが無駄でした／、なぜならおばあさんに強制されていた／悪い魔女が命令することを。

And now the best food was cooked/ for poor Hansel/, but Gretel got nothing but crab-shells/. Every morning the woman crept(creep) to the little stable/, and cried:

さて最良のごちそうが料理されました／かわいそうなヘンゼルに／、しかしグレーテルにはカニ殻しか貰えませんでした／。毎朝おばあさんは小さい小屋にこっそりやってきて／、そして怒鳴りました。

'Hansel, stretch out your finger/ that I may feel if you will soon be fat.' Hansel, however, stretched out a little bone to her/, and the old woman, who(she) had dim eyes/, could not see it/, and thought it was Hansel's finger/, and was astonished/ that there was no way of fattening him.

「ヘンゼル、指を出しなさい／、お前はもう太ったかどうか」／ヘンゼルはしかし小さい骨を彼女に差し出しました／、それでおばあさんは、くもった目をしていたので／、それが見えません／、それで骨をヘンゼルの指だと思い／、そしてびっくりしました／ヘンゼルはまったく太らないことを。

ほぼ四週間過ぎても／ヘンゼルはあいかわらずやせたままでした／、おばあさんは我慢できなくなって／もうこれ以上待てなくなりました／。「これ、グレーテル」とおばあさんは女の子に向って怒鳴りました／、「さっさと水をくんできなさい。／ヘンゼルは太っていようがやせていようが／、明日始末して、煮てしまうんだよ」

Ah, how the poor little sister did lament/ when she had to fetch the water/, and how her tears did flow down her cheeks!/ 'Dear God, do help us,' she cried/. 'If the wild beasts in the forest had but devoured us/, we should at any rate have died together.'/ 'Just keep your noise to yourself,' said the old woman, 'it won't help you at all.'

やれやれ、何と哀れなかわいい妹は嘆き悲しんだ／、水を取ってきたときに／、どんなに涙をほおに流したことでしょう！／「神さま、私たちをどうぞお助けください」とグレーテルは叫びました／。「森の中で恐ろしいけだものに食べられてしまえばよかった／、私たちはせめて一緒に死ねればよかったのに。」／「泣き叫ぶんじゃない。」とおばあさんは言いました、「どんなことをしたって助かりゃしない。」

Early in the morning/, Gretel had to go out/ and hang up the cauldron with the water/, and light the fire/. 'We will bake first,' said the old woman/, 'I have already heated the oven/, and kneaded the dough.'

あくる朝早く／、グレーテルは外へ出て／水を入れた釜をつるして／、そして火をつけなければなりませんでした／。「まずパンから焼くんだ。」とおばあさんは言いました／、「かまどはもう暖まってるし／、パン粉もこねてある。」

おばあさんはかわいそうなグレーテルをかまどの方へ突き飛ばしました／、かまどからは炎が燃え上がりもう飛び回っていた／。「はって入って」と魔女が言いました／、「それで火がちょうどよく暖まっているかどうか見るんだよ／、それでパンを中に入れることができるように。」

And once Gretel was inside/, she intended to shut the oven/ and let her bake in it/, and then she would eat her, too/. But Gretel saw/ what she had in mind, and said:/ 'I do not know how I am to do it;/ how do I get in?'

そしてグレーテルを中に入れたら／、おばあさんはかまどのふたを閉めるつもりで／そしてグレーテルをその中で焼いて／、それからこれもついでにたいらげるつもりでした／。しかしグレーテルは知っていた／おばあさんの考えていることを、それで言いました／「どういうふうにしたらいいか分からないわ／、どうやってそこに入り込むの？」

'Silly goose,' said the old woman/. 'The door is big enough;/ just look, I can get in myself!/' and she crept(creep) up/ and thrust her head into the oven.

「ばかな子だね。」と魔女は言い／。「扉は十分に大きいし／、よく見てごらん、私だって中に入れるんだから。」／それからはって近づき／頭をかまどに突っ込みました。

そのときグレーテルはひと押しおばあさんを押しました／深く奥に押し込みました／、そして鉄の戸を閉めて／かんぬきを固定しました／。ウウッ！そこでおばあさんはかなり恐ろしくうめき始めました／、しかしグレーテルは逃げ出し／そして神を認めない魔女はみじめに焼け死にました。

Gretel, however, ran(run) like lightning to Hansel/, opened his little stable, and cried:/ 'Hansel, we are saved! /The old witch is dead!/' Then Hansel sprang(spring)/ like a bird from its cage/ when the door is opened/. How they did rejoice/ and embrace each other/, and dance about/ and kiss each other!

グレーテルは、ただ、素早くヘンゼルの方へ走りました／、犬小屋のドアを開けて、叫びました／「ヘンゼル、私たち救われたよ！／魔女のおばあさんは死んだよ！」そのときヘンゼルは飛び出しました／おりから飛び出す小鳥のように／ドアを開けた時に／。どれほど子どもたちは嬉しかったことだろう／、お互いに抱きつき合い／、それで踊りまわり／そしてキスしあったことでしたか!

And as they had no longer any need to fear her/, they went into the witch's house/, and in every corner there stood chests full of pearls and jewels.

子どもたちはもう彼女を怖がる必要はなくなったので／、二人は魔女の家の中に入りました／、そしてそこには隅から隅までたくさんの真珠や宝石の詰まった箱がありました。

「これらはじゃり石よりずっと良い！」とヘンゼルは言いました／そしてポケットに押し込み／何でも入れられるだけ入れました／、それからグレーテルが言いました「私もいくらか家に持って帰るわ」／そしてエプロンにぎっしり詰め込みました。「さあもう行かないと。」／とヘンゼルは言いました／、「それくらいで魔女の森から逃げ出さなくては。」

When they had walked for two hours/, they came to a great stretch of water/. 'We cannot cross,' said Hansel/, 'I see no foot-plank, and no bridge.' 'And there is also no ferry,' answered Gretel/, 'but a white duck is swimming there:/ if I ask her, she will help us over.' Then she cried:

二時間ほど歩いていった時に／、彼らは大きく広がった川に出ました／。「渡れないな。」／とヘンゼルは言いました／、「いかだも、橋も見当たらないね」「それに渡し船一つも通っていないんですもの」とグレーテルが答えました／、「でもあそこに白いかもが1羽泳いでるわ／。きっとたのんだら、助けて渡してくれるわ。」そこでグレーテルは大きな声で呼びました。

The duck came to them/, and Hansel seated himself on its back/, and told(tell) his sister to sit by him/. 'No,' replied Gretel, 'that will be too heavy for the little duck;/ she shall take us across, one after the other.'

かもは子どもたちの方へきました／、そこでヘンゼルはその上に座って／そして小さい妹に一緒に座るようにすすめました／。「だめよ」グレーテルは答えました、「かもさんには重くなりすぎるわ／。一人ずつ渡してもらいましょう。」

The good little duck did so/, and when they were once safely across/ and had walked for a short time/, the forest seemed to be more and more familiar to them/, and at length they saw from afar their father's house.

親切なかもさんはそうしました／、それで二人無事に向こう岸に渡りましたとき／そして少し歩いて行くと／、森がだんだん見慣れたようになってきました／、とうとう彼らは遠くからお父さんの家を見つけました。

Then they began to run/, rushed into the parlour/, and threw themselves round their father's neck/. The man had not known one happy hour /since he had left the children in the forest;/ the woman, however, was dead.

そこで二人は走り始めました／、部屋の中に駆け込んで／そしてお父さんの首に抱きつきました／。お父さんはひと時も楽しくありませんでした／お父さんは子どもたちを森に置き去りにして以来／、一方まま母は死んでいました。

Gretel emptied(empty) her pinafore/ until pearls and precious stones ran(run) about the room/, and Hansel threw(throw) one handful after another out of his pocket to add to them/. Then all anxiety was at an end/, and they lived together in perfect happiness.

グレーテルは前掛けを空にしました／真珠や宝石が部屋一杯になるまで／、ヘンゼルもひと握りずつそれに追加してポケットから出して捨てました／。それですべての心配はなくなりました／、そしてみんな一緒に申し分ない幸せな暮らしをしました。

My tale is done/, there runs a mouse; whosoever catches it/, may make himself a big fur cap out of it.
