Once upon a time/ there was a dear little girl/ who(she) was loved by everyone/ who(they) looked at her/, but most of all by her grandmother/, and there was nothing/ that she would not have given to the child.

Once she gave her/ a little cap of red velvet/, which(it) suited her so well/ that she would never wear anything else/; so she was always called 'Little Red-Cap.'

One day her mother said to her/: 'Come, Little Red-Cap/, here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine/; take them to your grandmother/, she is ill and weak/, and they will do her good.

"Good morning", and don't peep into every corner/ before you do it.''I will take great care/,' said Little Red-Cap to her mother/, and gave her hand on it.
”おはようございます。”／それから部屋の隅々をちょっとのぞき込んだり／先にしてはいけません。」「私は細心の注意を払います。」／と赤ずきんはお母さんに言いました／、そしてお母さんと約束をしました。
The grandmother lived out in the wood/, half a league from the village/, and just as Little Red-Cap entered the wood/, a wolf met(meet) her/. Red-Cap did not know/ what a wicked creature he was/, and was not at all afraid of him.
おばあさんは森に住んでいました／村から歩いて半時間ほど離れた／、そして赤ずきんが森に入ると同時に／、おおかみに会いました／。赤ずきんは知らなかった／それがどんなに悪い生き物かを／、それでおおかみを全く怖がりませんでした。
'Good day, Little Red-Cap,' said he.

'Cake and wine; yesterday was baking-day, so poor sick grandmother/ is to have something good/, to make her stronger.'

'Where does your grandmother live, Little Red-Cap?'
「どこにおばあさんは住んでいるの、赤ずきんちゃん？」
'A good quarter of a league farther on in the wood/; her house stands/ under the three large oak-trees/, the nut-trees are just below/; you surely must know it,'/ replied Little Red-Cap.
「たっぷり歩いて１５分くらい先の森の中に／、家がたっている／三本の大きなかしの木の下に／、ちょっと低い所にはくるみの木がある／、あんた知ってるでしょ。」／と赤ずきんは答えました。
The wolf thought to himself/: 'What a tender young creature!/ what a nice plump mouthful/―she will be better/ to eat than the old woman/. I must act craftily/, so as to catch both.'
おおかみは心の中で考えました／。「何て若くてやわらかい子だ！／何とすてきなふっくらした一口分だ！／ーこの子の方がいい／おばあさんを食べるよりは／。巧妙にやらなければならない／、二つともぱっくりやるために。」
So he walked for a short time/ by the side of Little Red-Cap/, and then he said/: 'See, Little Red-Cap/, how pretty the flowers are/ about here/―why do you not look round?/I believe, too, /that you do not hear/ how sweetly the little birds are singing/; you walk gravely along/ as if you were going to school/, while everything else out here in the wood is merry.'
そこでおおかみはしばらく歩きました／赤ずきんのそばで／、それから言いました／。「見てごらん、赤ずきんちゃん／、なんとかわいらしい花があります／ここら辺には／ーなぜあたりを見回さないの？／さらに思うだけど／赤ずきんちゃんは聞こえてないようだ／小鳥があんなにやさしく歌っているのに／、むきになって歩いている前方へ／まるで学校にでも行くかのように／、その他すべてがこっちの森の方が楽しいのに。」
Little Red-Cap raised her eyes/, and when she saw the sunbeams/ dancing here and there/ through the trees/, and pretty flowers growing everywhere/, she thought/: 'Suppose I take/ grandmother a fresh nosegay/; that would please her too/. It is so early in the day that I shall still get there in good time'/; and so she ran from the path/ into the wood to look for flowers.
赤ずきんは目をあげました／、お日さまの光が目に入ってきたとき／あちらこちらで踊っています／木の間を通って／、そしてきれいな花がそこらじゅういっぱいに／、彼女は考えました／「私は持っていってあげたら／おばあさんに新鮮なかわいらしい花束を／、おばあさんも喜ぶと思います／。とても早いのだから早めにそこに着くわ」。／そこで道から離れて／森の中へ入り花を探しました。
And whenever she had picked one/, she fancied/ that she saw a still prettier one/ farther on/, and ran(run) after it/, and so got deeper and deeper/ into the wood.
彼女が一本折ったときすぐに／、思い込んだ／もっときれいな花が見れるということを／もっと先に／、そして追い掛けました／、それだからだんだん深くに入って行きました／森の中へ。
Meanwhile the wolf ran straight to the grandmother's house/ and knocked at the door.
その一方でおおかみはまっすぐおばあさんの家の方へ走って行って／ドアをノックしました。
'Who is there?'
「そこにいるのは誰？」
'Little Red-Cap,' replied the wolf. 'She is bringing cake and wine; open the door.'
「赤ずきんです。」おおかみは答えました。「お菓子とぶどう酒を持ってきたの／、ドアを開けてちょうだい。」
'Lift the latch,' called out the grandmother/, 'I am too weak, and cannot get up.'
「取っ手を押しなさい。」おばあさんが大声でいいました／、「私は弱っていて、起きることができないの。」
The wolf lifted the latch/, the door sprang(spring) open/, and without saying a word/ he went straight to the grandmother's bed/, and devoured her.
おおかみが取っ手を押しました／、ドアが跳ねるように開いた／、そして一言もいわず／真っすぐにおばあさんのベッドへ行って／、おばあさんをガツガツ食べました。
Then he put on her clothes/, dressed himself in her cap/ laid(lay) himself in bed/ and drew(draw) the curtains.
それからおおかみはおばあさんの服を着て／、彼女のずきんをかぶって／ベッドに横になり／カーテンを引きました。
Little Red-Cap, however, had been running about picking flowers/, and when she had gathered so many/ that she could carry no more/, she remembered her grandmother/, and set out on the way to her.
また一方、赤ずきんは花を摘み取りながら駆け回りました／、彼女はとても沢山集めたとき／これ以上持てないほど／、おばあさんのことを思い出しました／。そしておばあさんの方へ向かって行きました。
She was surprised/ to find/ the cottage-door standing open/, and when she went into the room/, she had such a strange feeling/ that she said to herself/: 'Oh dear!/ how uneasy I feel today/, and at other times/ I like being with grandmother so much.'
彼女は不思議に思いました／見つけて／小屋のドアが開いたままになっているのを／、そして部屋に入ったとき／、とても妙な感じがした／彼女は独り言をいいました／、「おや、まあ！／なんて今日はおろおろしているのだろう。／普段は／おばあさんと共に過ごすのは大好きなのに。」
She called out/: 'Good morning/,' but received no answer/; so she went to the bed and drew(draw) back the curtains/. There lay(lie) her grandmother/ with her cap pulled far over her face/, and looking very strange.
赤ずきんは大声でいいました／、「おはようございます。」／しかしなんの返事も受け取りませんでした／、そこで彼女はベッドの方に行きそしてカーテンを引き開けました／。そこにはおばあさんが寝ていました／おばあさんのずきんを頭から深くかぶって／、とても変に見える。
'Oh! grandmother,' she said, 'what big ears you have!'

'The better to hear you with, my child,' was the reply.
「おまえの言うことが良く聞こえるようにですよ。かわい子ちゃん」と答えた。
'But, grandmother, what big eyes you have!' she said.
「あら、おばあさん、何て大きな目をしているのでしょう！」彼女は言った。
'The better to see you with, my dear.'
「おまえの顔が良く見えるようにですよ。かわい子ちゃん」
'But, grandmother, what large hands you have!'
「あら、おばあさん、何て大きな手をしているのでしょう！」
'The better to hug you with.'
「おまえをいっそう良く抱っこできるようにですよ。」
'Oh! but, grandmother, what a terrible big mouth you have!'
「あら、でも、おばあさん、何ておそろしく大きな口をしているのでしょう！」
'The better to eat you with!'
「おまえをいっそう良く食べることができるように！」
And scarcely had the wolf said this/, than with one bound he was out of bed/ and swallowed up Red-Cap.
おおかみはそう言うとすぐさま／、ベッドからひととびで飛び出していた／そして赤ずきんを飲み込んでしまいました。
When the wolf had appeased his appetite/, he lay down again in the bed/, fell asleep and began(begin) to snore very loud/. The huntsman was just passing the house/, and thought(think) to himself/: 'How the old woman is snoring!/ I must just see if she wants anything.'
おおかみは食欲を満たしたとき／、またベッドに横になって／、眠ってしまいましたそれで大きないびきをかき始めました／。猟師がちょうどそのときおばあさんの家を通りかかり／、そして思いました／。「おばあさんはどうして大きないびきをかいているんだろう！私が見てやらなくては彼女が何かどうかしたのか。」
So he went into the room/, and when he came to the bed/, he saw that the wolf was lying in it/. 'Do I find you here/, you old sinner!/' said he/. 'I have long sought(seek) you!'
そこで彼は部屋の中に入りました／ベッドの方へ行くと／、猟師はおおかみが寝ているのが見えた／。「こんなところにいたのか／、いまいましい罪人め！」彼は言った／。「長い間探したぞ！」
Then just as he was going to fire at him/, it occurred to him/ that the wolf might have devoured the grandmother/, and that she might(may) still be saved/, so he did not fire/, but took a pair of scissors/, and began to cut open the stomach/ of the sleeping wolf.
そうしたら猟師はおおかみに発砲しようとして／、考えが彼の心に浮かんだ／。おおかみがおばあさんを食べたかもしれないということ／、なのでまだ助けられるかもしれない／、それで彼は鉄砲をうたないで／、ハサミを取った／、そしてお腹を切り開き始めました／眠っているおおかみの。
When he had made two snips/, he saw the little Red-Cap shining/, and then he made two snips more/, and the little girl sprang(spring) out, crying/: 'Ah, how frightened I have been/! How dark it was/ inside the wolf';
二回ほどチョキンと切ると／、赤ずきんがちらちらするのが見えました／、それで彼はなお二、三度切ると／、女の子が飛び起きて、叫びました／。「ああ、おどろいちゃった！／何て暗いんでしょう! ／おおかみのおなかの中は。」
And after that the aged grandmother came out alive also/, but scarcely able to breathe/. Red-Cap, however/, quickly fetched great stones /with which(with them) they filled the wolf's belly/, and when he awoke/, he wanted to run away/, but the stones were so heavy/ that he collapsed at once/, and fell dead.
それから年とったおばあさんもまだ生きていて出てきました／、しかしやっと息ができるくらいでした／。また一方赤ずきんは／、素早く大きな石を持ってきたので／それらを三人でおおかみの腹に詰め込みました／、おおかみは目をさましたとき／、逃げ出したかった、／しかし石がたいへん重かったので／おおかみはすぐに崩れるように倒れました／、そして死んでしまいました。
Then all three were delighted/. The huntsman drew(draw) off the wolf's skin/ and went home with it/; the grandmother ate the cake/ and drank the wine which(them) Red-Cap had brought(bring)/, and revived/, but Red-Cap thought to herself/: 'As long as I live/, I will never by myself leave the path/, to run into the wood/, when my mother has forbidden me/ to do so.'
そのとき三人とも喜び／。猟師はおおかみの毛皮を取り除き／そしてそれを持って帰りました／。おばあさんはお菓子を食べ／それからワインを飲みました／赤ずきんが持ってきてくれた／、そして元気を取り戻しました／、しかし赤ずんは考えました／。「私が生きている間は、／決して一人でわき道にそれたりしません／、森の中に入るようなことは、お母さんに禁じられたとき／そのようなことをすることを。」
It also related/ that once when Red-Cap was again taking cakes/ to the old grandmother/, another wolf spoke to her/, and tried to entice her from the path.
またこういう物語りもありました／。あるとき赤ずきんがまたお菓子を持って行きました時／おばあさんのところへ／、別なおおかみが彼女に話しかけ／、そして道から彼女をうまい話で釣ろうとしました。
Red-Cap, however, was on her guard/, and went straight forward on her way/, and told her grandmother/ that she had met the wolf/, and that he had said/ 'good morning' to her/, but with such a wicked look in his eyes/, that if they had not been on the public road/ she was certain he would have eaten her up/. 'Well,' said the grandmother/, 'we will shut the door/, that he may not come in.'
けれども、赤ずきん、は用心しました／、そして途中はまっすぐに前の方に向って行きました／、それからおばあさんに話しました／おおかみに出会ったことを／、そしておおかみは言った「おはよう。」と彼女に／、しかしとても意地悪な目つきで見た／、もし公道でなかったら／彼女はきっとおおかみに食べられたに違いない／。「話を聞きましょう。」／おばあさんが言いました／、「ドアを閉めましょう／、おおかみが入れないように。」
Soon afterwards/ the wolf knocked/, and cried/: 'Open the door, grandmother, I am Little Red-Cap/, and am bringing you some cakes.'
その後間もなく／おおかみがノックした／、そして呼びました／。「ドアを開けて、おばあさん、赤ずきんですよ／、お菓子を持ってきたの。」
But they did not speak, or open the door/, so the grey-beard stole(steal)/ twice or thrice round the house/, and at last jumped on the roof/, intending to wait/ until Red-Cap went home in the evening/, and then to steal after her/ and devour her in the darkness.
しかし二人はだまって、ドアを開けませんでした／、それでおいぼれおおかみはこっそり歩いて／家の周囲を二三度／、そしてしまいには屋根に飛び上がり／、待っているつもりでした／赤ずきんが夕方家に帰るまで／、その後にこっそり後を付けて／暗闇の中でガブリと食べてやろうと。
But the grandmother saw/ what was in his thoughts/. In front of the house/ was a great stone trough/, so she said to the child/: 'Take the pail, Red-Cap/; I made some sausages yesterday/, so carry the water/ in which(in them) I boiled them to the trough.'
しかしおばあさんは気付きました／おおかみの考えていることを／。家の前に／大きな石の水ための桶がありました／、そこでおばあさんは子供に言いました／。「手桶を持ちなさい、赤ずきんちゃん、／私は昨日ソーセージを作りました／、だからその水を運びなさい／それらを私は煮て桶に入れたものを。」
Red-Cap carried/ until the great trough was quite full/. Then the smell of the sausages reached the wolf/, and he sniffed and peeped down/, and at last stretched out his neck so far/ that he could no longer keep his footing/ and began to slip/, and slipped down from the roof/ straight into the great trough/, and was drowned.
あかずきんは運びました／大きな桶に完全にいっぱいになるまで／するとソーセージの臭いがおおかみまで届き／、おおかみはクンクン臭いを嗅いでそして下をのぞきました／しまいには首をあまり伸ばしたので／おおかみは足元の状態をもはや止めることができなくて／ずるずる滑りはじめました／、そして屋根から滑り落ちました／真っすぐに大きな水ために／そして溺れ死んでしまいました／。
But Red-Cap went joyously home/, and no one ever did anything/ to harm her again.
