An aged count once lived in Switzerland/, who(he) had an only son/, but he was stupid/, and could learn nothing/. Then said the father:
年をとった伯爵がむかしスイスにくらしていました／。彼には男の子がたった一人いました／、だけどこの子はぼんくらで／、何一つおぼえることができませんでした／。それで、父親は言いました。
'Hark you, my son/, try as I will/ I can get nothing/ into your head/. You must go from hence/, I will give you into the care of a celebrated master/, who(he) shall see what he can do with you.'
「これ、せがれや／、私はやってみたけれども／私にはどうにもならない／お前の頭を／。お前は出て行きなさい今から／、署名な先生の世話にあずけて／、先生に見てもらいお前を何とかしてもらうことにしよう。」
The youth was sent(send) into a strange town/, and remained(remain) a whole year with the master.
男の子は見知らぬ町へやられた／、そして先生のところにまる1年いました。
At the end of this time/, he came home again/, and his father asked/: 'Now, my son, what have you learnt(learn)?'
その月日がたつと／、彼は家に帰ってきました再び／、そして父親が尋ねました／。「せがれや、お前は何を覚えたかね？」
'Father, I have learnt/ what the dogs say when they bark.'
「お父さん、私は覚えました／犬たちがほえるときの言葉のことを」
'Lord have mercy on us!/' cried the father; 'is that all you have learnt? I will send you into another town, to another master.'
「おやまあ、なさけないやつだ！（主よ、哀れみたまえ！）」／父親はどなりました／、「それだけかお前が覚えたのは？わしはお前を別な町の別な先生のところにやろう」
The youth was taken thither/, and stayed a year with this master likewise.男の子はそこに連れていかれました／、そして1年間この先生のところにいました同じように。
When he came back/ the father again asked: 'My son, what have you learnt?'
彼は帰ったときに／父親がまた尋ねました。「せがれや、お前は何を覚えたのか？」
He answered: 'Father, I have learnt(learn)/ what the birds say.'
子供は答えました。「お父さん、僕は覚えました／小鳥の話す言葉のことを。」
Then the father fell(fall) into a rage and said:
すると、父親は激怒して言いました。
'Oh, you lost(lose) man/, you have spent the precious time/ and learnt nothing/; are you not ashamed/ to appear before my eyes?
「お前は何という駄目な奴だ／、お前は尊い時間をすごして／何も覚えなかったのか／。お前は恥ずかしくもなく／わしの目の前に出るのか？」
I will send you/ to a third master/, but if you learn nothing this time also/, I will no longer be your father.'
わしはお前をやろう／３番目の先生のところに／、だが、お前は今度も何も覚えなかったら／、わしはもうお前のお父さんじゃないぞ。
The youth remained a whole year/ with the third master also/, and when he came home again/, and his father inquired:
男の子はまる1年いました／３番目の先生のところにもやはり／、そしてまた家に戻ってきましたときに／、父親は尋ねました。
'My son, what have you learnt?
「せがれや、お前は何を覚えてきたのか？」
he answered: 'Dear father, I have this year learnt what the frogs croak.'
彼は答えました／。「お父さん、僕はこの1年間かえるの鳴く言葉のことを覚えました。」
Then the father fell(fall) into the most furious anger/, sprang up/, called his people thither, and said:
すると父親は激怒し始め／飛び上がり／家来たちをそこへ呼びよせて、そして言いました。
'This man is no longer my son/, I drive him forth/, and command you/ to take him out into the forest/, and kill him.'
「こいつはもうわしの息子じゃない／、わしはこいつを追い出す、／命令だ／こいつを森の中へ連れて行って／、仕留めてしまえ。」
They took(take) him forth/, but when they should have killed him/, they could not do it/ for pity/, and let him go/, and they cut the eyes and tongue out of a deer/ that they might carry them/ to the old man as a token.
家来達は彼を連れ出しました／が彼を殺さなければならなくなると／、彼らはそれをできなかった／かわいそうになって／、彼を逃がしてやりました／、それから彼らは子鹿の目と舌を切り取り／それらを持っていかなければならない／年をとった伯爵に証拠として。
The youth wandered on/, and after some time came to a fortress/ where he begged for a night's lodging.
若者はさまよい歩いた／、しばらくすると要塞にたどりついた／そこで彼は一夜の宿を頼みました。
'Yes,' said the lord of the castle/, 'if you will pass the night down there in the old tower/, go thither/; but I warn you/, it is at the peril of your life/, for it is full of wild dogs/, which(they) bark and howl/ without stopping/, and at certain hours a man has to be given to them/, whom(them) they at once devour.'
「いいですよ」城主は言いました／、「もしお前があの下の古い塔に今晩泊る気なら／、あそこへ行きなさい／、だけど注意しておくが／、お前の一生の危機だよ／、たくさんの野生の犬がいるから／、犬どもが叫んでほえている／やめることなく／、必ず決まった時間に一人貰うことになっている／、犬どもはすぐにむさぼり食べてしまうのだ」
The whole district was in sorrow and dismay/ because of them/, and yet no one could do anything to stop this.
そこらあたり一帯は悲しみおびえていました／それらのせいで／、それなのに誰もどうすることもできませんでした。
The youth, however, was without fear, and said: 'Just let me go down/ to the barking dogs/, and give me something/ that I can throw to them/; they will do nothing/ to harm me.'
若者は、けれども、怖がらず、そして言いました。「どうか行かせて下さい／吠えてる犬のところへ／、それから何か下さい／私が犬たちに投げてやる物を／、犬たちは何もしません／私に危害を加えることを。」
As he himself would have it so/, they gave him some food for the wild animals/, and led(lead) him down to the tower.
若者はそれほどしたいのだということで／、みんなは彼に野生の動物の食べ物をやり／、彼を塔に連れて行きました。
When he went inside/, the dogs did not bark at him/, but wagged(wag) their tails quite amicably around him/, ate(eat) what he set before them/, and did not hurt one hair of his head.
彼が中に入ると／、犬は彼に向って吠えるのではなく／、すっかり友好的にしっぽをふって彼のまわりをぐるぐるまわり／、彼が出す物を食べました／、それから彼にはまったく傷つけることはしませんでした。
Next morning/, to the astonishment of everyone/, he came out again safe and unharmed/, and said to the lord of the castle: 'The dogs have revealed to me/, in their own language/, why they dwell there/, and bring evil on the land.
次の朝／、みんなが驚いたことに／、彼は再び無事に無傷で姿をあらわしました／、そして城主に言いました。「犬どもは私に明らかにしました／、犬のことばで／、何故あそこに住み／、国に害を及ぼしているか」
They are bewitched/, and are obliged to watch over/ a great treasure/ which(it) is below in the tower/, and they can have no rest/ until it is taken away/, and I have likewise learnt/, from their discourse/, how that is to be done.'
犬たちは魔法をかけられていて／、見守ることをしなければならない／大きな宝物を／それは塔の下にある／、そして彼らは休むことができない／宝物が掘り出されるまでは／、そして私は同じように分かりました／、彼らの話しから／、どうしたらそれがやれるかを」
Then all who(they) heard(hear) this rejoiced/, and the lord of the castle said/ he would adopt him/ as a son if he accomplished it successfully.
そのときみんなはそれを聞いて喜びました／、城主は言いました／彼を養子にすると／若者がそれをうまく成し遂げられたときに。
He went down again/, and as he knew(know)/ what he had to do/, he did it thoroughly/, and brought(bring) a chest full of gold out with him.
若者は再び下りて行きました／、そして彼は知っていた／何をしたらよいかを／、彼は徹底的にやって／、そして金のいっぱいつまった箱を彼と一緒に運びあげました。
The howling of the wild dogs was henceforth heard no more/; they had disappeared/, and the country was freed from the trouble.
野生の犬のほえる声はこれ以降もう聞かれなくなりました／。野生の犬はいなくなり／、そしてこの国は混乱から解放されました。
After some time/ he took it in his head/ that he would travel to Rome.
その後／若者は頭の中で思った／彼はローマに行きたいということを。
On the way he passed by a marsh/, in which(in it) a number of frogs were sitting croaking.
途中彼は沼のそばを通ると／、その中にたくさんのかえるがいて鳴いていました。
He listened to them/, and when he became aware of/ what they were saying/, he grew(grow) very thoughtful and sad.
彼は耳を傾けて／、気付きましたとき／かえる達の言っていることに／、彼はすっかり考え込んで悲しくなりました。
At last he arrived in Rome/, where the Pope had just died/, and there was great doubt/ among the cardinals/ as to whom they should appoint/ as his successor.
ようやく彼がローマにつくと／、そこでは法王がちょうど亡くなったところで／、そしてそこではたいへん不安でした／カーディナル（カトリックの枢機卿-すうききょう）達が一緒になって／彼らは誰を選任すべきか／後継者として。
They at length agreed/ that the person should be chosen as pope/ who(he) should be distinguished by some divine/ and miraculous token.
彼らはしまいには意見が一致しました／その人を法王に選ぼうということに／その人は群を抜く神から授かった／そして奇跡を起こす前ぶれの人である。
And just as that was decided on/, the young count entered into the church/, and suddenly two snow-white doves flew(fly) on his shoulders/ and remained sitting there.
そう決まったちょうどそのときに／、若い伯爵が教会に入ってきました／、すると突然に雪のように白い鳩が二羽彼の両方の肩に飛んできて／そこにじっととまっていました。
The ecclesiastics recognized therein/ the token from above/, and asked him on the spot/ if he would be pope.
聖職者たちはそのときに分かりました／神さまからの前ぶれだと／、そして彼に尋ねましたすぐその場で／法王になって下さるか。
He was undecided/, and knew not/ if he were worthy of this/, but the doves counselled him to do it/, and at length he said yes.
彼は決心できませんでした／、それからわかりませんでした／自分がこれをするに足りるかどうか／、しかし鳩はそうするがよいと彼に助言しました／、ついに彼は「はい」と言いました。
Then was he anointed and consecrated/, and thus was fulfilled/ what he had heard from the frogs on his way/, which(it) had so affected him/, that he was to be his Holiness the Pope.
そこで彼は聖油で清められて神聖なものになりました／、このようにして満たされました／彼が途中でかえるから聞いたこと／、それにはたいへん心を動かされました／、彼は神聖な法王になるはずだということ
Then he had to sing a mass/, and did not know one word of it/, but the two doves sat(sit) continually on his shoulders/, and said it all in his ear.
それで彼はミサのお祈りを唱えなければなりませんでした／、ひとことも文句を知りませんでした／、が二羽の鳩がたえず彼の肩の上にとまって／、全部耳打ちしてくれました。
